Rushmore [7 out of 10]

Rushmore 1998

Director: Wes Anderson
Written by : Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson

A 1998 movie written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson. Yes, yes, the same Owen Wilson that I like so much on so many movies! IMDB gives it a 7.7/10 as of today. I am not sure what to think of this movie. It was somewhat moving, but not that great. It’s a pretty twisted story. We start by learning that this kid, Max Fischer, gets put on probation because of his low grades and that the reason he has low grades is because he has too many extra curricular activities. This is all mixed with a twisted love story and friendships. It gives a pretty good idea of what it is to be a teenager I guess. I also think that it is a prett deep movie if you want to read into it, and that maybe I wasn’t into thinking tonight. Give it a try one day!

Doom [5 out of 10]

Doom 2005

Director: Andrzej Bartkowiak
Written By: Dave Callaham and Wesley Strick

So I just got back from the movies. I went to see Doom and I have to say, it was not soooo bad. I mean, granted the fact that I have seen the house of the dead lately might impair my judgement, but the movie was not too bad. The acting was okay, and the effects were not so bad. It got pretty bad when they started the ’1st person shooting’ stuff though. I hate to break it to ya, but they did it. And it’s bad. I mean real bad.

So basically for the first half of the movie everything is normal and they get a scare or two out of me, but then comes the ’1st person shooting mode’ and it ruins it. I mean, come on, if we want to play the game we’ll play it on our computers — not that I have the game on or anything, but a friend of mine does. Anyways, overall, I would give it a 5 out of 10. Yeah, that’s right, imagine what I gave to poor house of the dead… probably a 1 out 10. I’m pretty picky about the movies, but over five isw not too bad. I’ll try and let you know when I get to watch another movie.

By the way, this movie was 15$ to go see. It’s a cool theater, but it’s still pretty expensive out here in Auckland. They do let you come in with anything in your bag (Coke, chips, chocolate, etc) and so you don’t have to spend a ridiculous amount of money on stuff in the theater. So I guess it comes up to about the same. Anyway, not a big deal. I had a great time at the movies and that’s what movies were made for in the first place. Not a stupid contest to get oscars… right ? Cheers guys.

Trip to Tokerau Beach

On our way to Tokerau Beach

Trip to Tokerau Beach, North Island For those of you who didn’t know, it was the labour day weekend in New-Zealand last weekend and I went to Tokerau Beach in the Far North District. Tokerau Beach is very close to Cape Reinga which is the most northern point of New-Zealand. Kate’s mom, Kate is my flatmate, has a cabin out there and we were invited to spend (or invited ourselves) the weekend over there. So we drove there on saturday morning and came back on sunday night.

There are too many things I would like to say about this place, but I will let you guys discover most of them by looking at the pictures I just uploaded on the webpage. I also visited a place called Uretiti Beach which is another beach where Bonnie and I slept at on our last trip to new-Zealand. Overall it was a great little trip up north, but man was it tough bug-wise. You saw the post about “I’m such a city boy” ? Well, now you can see the tent in which I slept and understand why I said I was sleeping with the bugs. A good thing I had my iPod to accompany me in the tent. I played solitaire with the bugs for a while. Enough said, enjoy the pics by clicking on the thumbnail right there. Cheers.

Worldwide Tropical Cyclone Names

Hurrricane Image

An hurricane approaching Florida I was reading the article : “Hurricane Wilma batters Florida” from the bbc website, I found out that there are 21 official names for cyclone named every year and that they use the same first letter for each one every year. This is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s initiative, which is obviously an american research center.

Don’t get me wrong here, I am not complaining about the americans. I just think it’s kind of cute of them to name all of the hurricanes and cyclones after human names. I mean, it’s an interresting concept. You should check out the website at
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml to learn more about the names. Apparently, this year was the first to use one of the Greek alphabet names (alpha) because they had 22 Tropical Cyclone in the atlantic ocean so far. Funny that you would adopt a system that allowed such a low degree of freedom in terms of the number of possible names. I mean, what happens when they go through the 28 characters of the Greek alphabet ? For the curious out there, here is a list of the Greek alphabet:

  • α (Alpha)
  • β (Beta)
  • γ (Gamma)
  • δ (Delta)
  • ε (Epsilon)
  • ϝ (Digamma)
  • ζ (Zeta)
  • η (Eta)
  • θ (Theta)
  • ι (Iota)
  • κ (Kappa)
  • λ (Lambda)
  • μ (Mu)
  • ν (Nu)
  • ξ (Xi)
  • ο (Omicron)
  • π (Pi)
  • ϻ (San)
  • ϙ (Qoppa)
  • ρ (Rho)
  • σ (Sigma)
  • τ (Tau)
  • υ (Upsilon)
  • φ (Phi)
  • χ (Chi)
  • ψ (Psi)
  • ω (Omega)
  • ϡ (Sampi)

On another note, I just realized that 15 out of 28 Greek letters appear in my masters thesis so far. Hmm, I’ll see if I can squeeze the other 13 somewhere in there. I’m sure that it can be done.
