Start Cygwin from a folders context menu

My friend had a great little program, which essentially let you right click on any folder and open the command prompt there. The only program is that I never use the command line (CMD.EXE)… I use cygwin. A wonderful program that emulates Linux for windows, but also makes everything complicated!

After a short search on the web, I found a nice little discussion on a newsgroup that explained how to do it for cygwin. I just wanted to note the steps for windows XP, just so I don’t forget (If you really care… you can find steps for other versions on the discussion board).

1. Edit Registry

Start regedit.exe.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\BashHere="Bash Here"
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\BashHere\command="C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\CMD.EXE /E:4096 /c C:\\cygwin\\cygwin.bat %1"

Adjust the path to cygwin.bat if necessary.

Finish regedit.

You should now see the entry “Bash Here” in the context menu of a folder. However, when you use it, it will start the shell in your home directory ($HOME).

2. Edit cygwin.bat in c:/cygwin

Insert “set BASHHERE=%1″ before the line with “bash…”. This Environment variable now contains the complete path of the opened folder and is availabile in the bash shell (echo $BASHHERE).

3. Edit profile

Make $BASHHERE the current directory by adding the following line to
/etc/profile or ~/.profile:

if [ "$BASHHERE" != "" ]; then
    cd $( echo $BASHHERE | tr "\134" /)

Hank’s Cafe

Brownies at Hank's
Still looking for the best coffee shop in Toronto. Our main source of inspiration is blogto’s café’s listing, which is amazing! Today, it leads us to Hank’s. A small café down Church street, in the middle of the St-Lawrence Market district, with what we think, so far at least, is the best coffee shop in Toronto. In our opinion, what makes it the best, so far, is mainly the atmosphere, but also mainly the amazing coffee! ;)

We’ll still look around, but so far, the Bulldog has been dethroned by Jamie Kennedy’s newest addition, Hank’s:

  1. Hank’s: 9.5 Church Street (4.4/5)
  2. Bulldog: 89 Granby Street (4/5)
  3. Dark Horse Espresso Bar: 682 Queen Street East (3.5/5)

Summer is officially here

Last weekend, I really wasn’t able to get the Electric Light Orchestra’s song Mr. Blue Sky out of my head:

Sun is shinin’ in the sky
There ain’t a cloud in sight
It’s stopped rainin’ ev’rybody’s in a play
And don’t you know
It’s a beautiful new day hey,hey

Since my wife and I got our bikes to get around the city, we’ve found a ton of awesome things to do. Just over the span of the last weekend, we’ve sampled coffee from two of the best coffee shops of Toronto Bulldog and Dark Horse Espresso Bar, we’ve shopped in the amazing furniture shops of King East, walked on the Harbourfront, sat at the beach, and went to a free Blues Festival.

As for the coffee, I want to keep a little tally of the coffee houses I visit in Toronto over the summer. So far, the Bulldog is winning hands down. At both coffee shops we ordered Cappuccinos. The Bulldog had much better coffee (at least the one I had was very good), but was lacking in the nice atmosphere. Whereas the Dark Horse Espresso bar had a really nice atmosphere, but my coffee was not quite as good.

Here’s a quick snapshot we took when chilling at the beaches. There will be more coming over the summer, that’s for sure!
